What is Tohuwabohu Festival?

Tohuwabohu is a streaming-only metal festival, broadcast from a legendary Swiss music venue with a full production, from sound to lights and video. In these crazy times we are trying something different: bands and organisers are coming together to create a unique event, in an effort to bring at least one summer festival to you this year.

We are combining the best of both worlds in an effort to connect us all: fans, artists, and crew alike. The show will kick off at 6PM CEST with a joint interview with members of each band, and your comments during the stream will be displayed during the performances for the artists to see.

Tickets are “pay what you like”, and we rely on your support and generosity. But since many of us around the world have been hit hard by this crisis, and since Tohuwabohu Festival wants to be inclusive to anyone around the globe, you can also watch for free if you can’t afford to get a ticket or festival merch.

We’ve also made a festival shirt and created limited posters signed by all the artists. All, and we mean ALL of your contributions, ticket sales and merch sales will be split between bands, organisers and crew involved, while a portion of proceeds is donated to the Spotify COVID-19 Music Relief fund & the Given To Live charity.

By forgoing a live audience, we ensure the health and safety of everyone involved. And by broadcasting the show live instead, we transcend borders and bridge divides, bringing together the incredible worldwide metal scene and offering at least one summer festival.

Tohuwabohu is a real live show: all bands will play their sets on a proper stage, with full sound & light production, broadcast in real time with professional cameras.

When and where can I watch?

Right here on www.tohuwabohu.rocks/show. We’ll announce more details in the coming weeks — follow our updates and sign up to our mailing list!

What does it cost?

However much you are willing to give and able to afford. Even if you can’t afford a voluntary, pay-what-you-want ticket or some of our festival merch, you are still very welcome to join and watch.

In any case: THANK YOU for supporting live music in these unprecedented times. We can’t wait to rock out with you.

How can I contribute?

We offer voluntary, pay-what-you-want tickets. Every little bit counts, and every contributor will receive a digital tickets. All contributors who give €15 or more will also receive a commemorative physical hardticket!

Furthermore, you can buy official festival merch right here from our website.

Where does the money go?

Fairness is our guiding principle. All artists, from the headliner to the opener, receive a direct share of all revenues.

Furthermore, 5% of our gross profits will be donated to the organisations taking part in Spotify’s COVID-19 Music Relief effort. We will pass on this money to these national organisations proportionally to where we received it from. For example, 5% of our revenues from Brazilian supporters will be given to the Brazilian Union of Composers; 5% of our revenues from U.K. contributors will be donated to Help Musicians UK; and so forth. Any amounts that are not attributable geographically will be donated to the Given To Live charity, a non-profit organisation that takes vulnerable, disabled, disadvantaged and excluded fans to see their favourite bands. You can also indicate your preference between the two options when contributing.

Any remaining money will go to covering our costs (such as fixed venue costs, PPE, video production, etc.) and, finally, to the people behind the event, who are musicians, crew, and music industry creatives themselves.

Is this event safe?

We have a comprehensive and thorough COVID-19 Safety Concept in place:

  • No live audience will be present, and only essential personnel will be allowed in the building.

  • Kofmehl is a large venue with multiple concert and backstage rooms; there will be ample space both on and off stage to keep the recommended safe distance between artists and crew.

  • Disinfectant, face masks, and disposable gloves will be made available to all artists and crew.

  • No people with symptoms will be allowed in the building.

In the unlikely case that lockdown measures, illness, or other unexpected factors interfere with our ability to realise our event as planned, we will either reschedule or offer refunds to all contributors.

Who’s behind Tohuwabohu?

Tohuwabohu was created by KM Music - a small company created by Merlin Sutter, drummer of Cellar Darling, and Kate Piatkowska, the band’s long-time sound engineer. Both also manage artists (including Cellar Darling and Kassogtha). Along with Kate and Merlin, Kulturfabrik Kofmehl — one of Switzerland’s premier independent music venues — has come on board and is supporting the festival with significant cost reductions and voluntary work, and so is the local video production company jumpTV.

Tohuwabohu Festival is furthermore supported by Pro Helvetia:
